Maybe it would be helpful for users if the whole object would turn into a big "open" link on mouseover? Something like an inverted or greyed out version of the object with OPEN in big letters on it.
Reason: Some of the users struggle with double-clicking on an object which acts as a link and they don't find the little "open" in some cases.
