✅ Adopted Feature Idea: Easier grid creation

Creating a grid is difficult without a mouse; on my laptop it is a major pain point. It would be great to have a "create grid" function with a window next to "rows" and "columns" where you can just put in the number you want, and out pops a grid you can stretch or minimize in size, and take a line out of, or shift from the even auto-distribute, or color if desired.

  • Yes! This would be an incredibly useful feature. Now that I know how to distribute lines evenly across a space, making grids / tables is a little easier but I think this is the main thing missing from MURAL in terms of creating content on the board.

Oh yes, that would be great. Some kind of Grid/Table creation tool :-)

  • This is long overdue in Mural - it's been in MS Word and the like forever... It'd be very useful.

  • In the meantime, check out this helpful video about creating spreadsheets in a flash in MURAL by MURALista @Gino

  • A table feature would be a game changer! Especially for discussions where you want to put a little more structure around. I've tried the workarounds of drawing grids or using rectangles to represent cells in a table but it's a fair amount of manual effort and just not the same. Being able to insert table, type text directly into those cells, tab to insert additional rows etc would be really helpful

  • My team member recently spoke about the lack of interactive tables/grids as a pain point for using mural.

We would benefit from having tables that we can adjust and scale up/down!

Would like to test it, too. But my calendar is quite crowded these days...

  • Would love to see the option of "turning on" a grid that spans the entire MURAL area - to be able to align things - then "turn it off" or make it unviewable to the greater team.

  • manuel
    manuel ✭✭✭✭

Oh yes, that suits the request by @Christina to get the MURAL-typical dotted background in MURAL :-) Being able to turn it on and off would be a great addition.

    @manuel You know it!

@Andrea_Walters_SAP In the meantime, you can choose from a plethora of options if you type in "grid" in either the regular images search, or in the Unsplash option for some funky ones.

You can also pull more types from Rawpixel.com, then delete when no longer needed.

A quick grid📊 function would be very cool though, totally agree!

  • Would be amazing to see something like the grid tool in Google Docs

  • manuel
    manuel ✭✭✭✭

I suppose, we're going to see something like that with some cool features to easily enhance or modify a grid after it as been inserted.

  • Any news on grid or table creation???

  • @Christina what do you mean by unsplash option?

Hi @mikaela, recently Mural added access to Giphy and Unsplash directly to their Image search, like this:

If for some reason you don't see it, you can simply pull free images from their main website: https://unsplash.com/ which offers tons of very sharp, high quality options.

Hello, I am a new Mural user, and I am trying to create a dynamic table as I was used to have in Miro (https://miro.com/blog/introducing-miro-grids-visual-tables-for-structuring-your-board-content/)

Having this behavior help me a lot when for example, I am creating service blueprints, designing journeys and other things, because I can keep all organized and eveything moves automaticaly if I add a new row or collumn.

How can I do this? Is there any suggestion?

  • Hoping this gets picked up. It's so archaic not being able to insert a simple data table that you can type in each cell. For example, I'm trying to illustrate how a process turns into data. Showing an example of tabular data would make this visual much better, but it's so painful to do currently.

Hi Giovani! This is a current feature that our product team is working on. The beta hasn't started yet, but if you're interested in participating, I'm happy to connect you!

You can also vote on this idea in our Feature Ideas category- please add use cases as you'd like, as they are read by our product team.

  • What is the progression of this feature?

Is this already in the developing process?

The dynamic table is one of the disadvantage point of Mural compare with Miro

    edited March 2022

The lack of dynamic tables and the kanban feature are currently the main reasons why I have to use Miro instead. I would like to be part of the beta test program, please consider me if possible. I guess I have to DM you the workspace ID in case you accept me as a tester.

  • I would also like to be a tester of the grid feature. This and the kanban are features my workshop participants use all the time and the lack in Mural is the main reason why I have to use Miro instead.

@Christina - 100%- thanks for looping us back to this one.

As it stands, this is a pretty big topic/thread for all of us, and I've let support know we'd like each of you to be included in beta testing.

    I will keep you updated!

  • Hi, is there any schedule for releasing that feature? It is a pitty, drawing a table manually with grid lines, and then re-sizing every single cell manually...

  • Time to ask again - any update on progress for the tables? I'm about to start a bunch of workshops where I could really use tables to help keep my categories aligned (think kanban / task board)

  • Hi @Andrea_Walters_SAP @manuel and @Christina ,

My name is Morgan, and I'm the product marketing manager for our infinite canvas feature. I wanted to follow up with you all directly and say thank you for providing us this feedback.

Last month we released our infinite canvas and it has a helpful dot grid for alignment that can be toggled on and off. If you haven't yet tried out our infinite canvas, please see our help article here: https://support.mural.co/en/articles/6167819-mural-s-infinite-canvas to learn more about the dot grid and snap to grid features. Currently dot grids and snap to grid are only available on our infinite canvas option, but we are evaluating bringing them to our resizable canvas option as well.

Don't hesitate to respond here with additional questions, and please keep sharing your feedback!

@nadiar Just tried to send that email, and got a Delivery Status Notification (Failure). I did not use .com and just used exactly as above, so you might want to double check that address.

Please contact me to arrange a trial. This is a feature I would use a lot.

    Thanks!

Hi everybody! Working on my first table right now! 3 quick things I wonder how the folks here see:

    1. Font size. It would be great to be able to set this for the whole table ahead of time so it doesn't always default so tiny I can't see it unless I zoom in so close I lose sight of the table overview.
    2. Choosing width and height for columns and rows, and in general being able to highlight groups of cells at a time. The way you can highlight one whole row or column at a time by clicking on the grid at the edge is a good start.
    3. A way to copy the whole thing into the content library so a grid you just spent a long time on can be used again and again.

I've invited Mural in the application to contact me for more detailed feedback, but interested in Community thoughts on this too. I look forward to using this feature A LOT so a big thanks to Mural for making tables a reality!!!

...also @MeghanatMURAL and @nadiar here is what I mean. Ideally I would like to be able to highlight several boxes in the table at a time.

In this case, it is because we are planning a garden full of near-extinct fruit varieties at our vacation rental, Villa Leoni in Santa Teresa di Gallura in Sardinia, and I want to try to have something either blooming or pluckable throughout the year as much as possible that our guests can stroll around and explore - a veritable Galluran Garden of Eden 😊. As we research different loquat, etc. options the light pink "flowering" and dark pink "mature" boxes will be moving around a lot, hence the group highlighting desire.

The chart is very handy for showing a calendar along with images of trees and fruits in a way not possible in Excel, but it is time consuming to highlight each box individually, and to adjust the font individually too. Also, in the image above the table looks much smaller than the one in the mural. Odd but promising!

  • So much good feedback, @Christina (and how cool, the garden concept)! This feature is new for me too- let me do some testing and check in with the team for feedback.

  • This is exactly, what I was looking for! Thanks a lot for your contribution and implementation of that great feature, makes my work with mural board much easier.😊

  • Table functionality is greath! Thanks Mural!

Having the + for adding columns and rows alwais available

... to me (new to the use of the table functionality) it looks like the + for adding rows and/or columns are not alwais poping up as I want them to pop-up. Why not alwais show them?!

  • @Leo, thanks for your feedback! Might we invite you to an upcoming beta for potential feedback? What you've mentioned is certainly helpful.

  • nadiar
    nadiar Mural Team mod

@Leo thanks for your feedback. Adding rows and columns icons display according to the zoom level. At certain zoom levels they stop being displayed so that they don't get in the way of you interacting with other elements. Does this make sense to you?

  • I second the ability to add a table to the content library!!
