💡 Feature Idea: Image as Background

I would love to be able to add more options both colors and images as backgrounds. Right now if you create this look via the tools provided (either from an image that you send to back or a shape that you send to back) it interferes with MURAL functions such as voting. It would be so awesome if we could customize the actual canvas vs having to makeshift it.

I like the ideas of a blurry or "faded" image as background. To me it's not a big thing, but I understand the wish. What would you use it for?

And how about the color options for backgrounds - what would like to see in Mural?

@sms560 We hear this request from time to time! 🤗 Can't wait to see your idea collect votes. Thanks for sharing!

  • Would definitely love to be able to add custom colors. I like making my Murals using the company's color theme and background is a custom color. I use the workaround to add a background element but it adds multiple complexities (e.g. vote, when you "send to the back" an element you have to unlock and select the background as well, forces you to lock it to prevent interactions but adds time to resize if the canvas is resized, etc.).

Custom image could be nice, but the performance hit, stretch/fill/tile to accommodate different canvas size, etc. makes it hard to implement.

  • Would love if the background color would automatically define the default text color (black or white) or better: if we could define it too. Again, when using the company's theme, black isn't used for text. But also it could simplify having "dark" Mural with a darker background (I'm on team Dark Theme 😁) and defaults text to white/bright to contrast.

I would like to also see background images for areas, too: a little bit "faded" in intensity, but it would be cool to use an image for the background in an area. I've tried to work around this "missing" feature:

I want to be able to take an image as the background of an area and fade it out a little so that it won't "interfere" with the contents of that area. The red frame is only to indicate what's meant with fading it :-)

  • I have been using an image for my retros, the major issue I have is the layer control is VERY basic in Mural, which makes sizing, alignment and layering difficult. It would be nice if any significant improvement images/canvas usage would include this functionality.
