On an already selected object, have Ctrl + click DEselect the object so it's consistent with Shift + click.

2. The problem you are trying to solve

Shift + click on an object selects / deselects.

3. Why this helps everyone (or many people)

Consistency is a good thing. Gives people options over whether they use Shift or Ctrl.
